Business as usual for Royal Horseshoeing Championships
Following the final Royal Show last year, NAFBAE's neighbours on Stoneleigh Park have been hard at work developing the substantial equine element of the Royal into a standalone event.
By all accounts the Royal Festival of the Horse, as it is called, is shaping up to be quite a show. Crucially for the farrier community, the change from the Royal of old will actually work well for NAFBAE's Royal Horsehoeing Championships.
With a totally equine focus, the farriery competitions have taken on a bigger profile within the Royal Festival of the Horse and with it greater opportunity to inform the horse owning public about the importance of the farrier's skills.
The Association is again pleased to welcome the support of ProFeet as title sponsor. The format of the competition is largely unchanged from previous years. Four days of gruelling shoemaking and shoeing begins on Thursday 8 July a day ahead of the Festival, concluding on Sunday 11 July with the National Championship that will decide who is this year's top British competition farrier.
On the way the qualified farriers will tackle a variety of classes including hunter, heavy horse and roadster shoeing and therapeutic shoemaking, working variously out of coke and gas.
The tongs and shoe class add an extra dimension as competitors have to also make the tongs that they must then use to help them make a specimen shoe.
Top class competitors need top class judges and this year is no exception with NAFBAE securing the services of Allan Ferrie, Steve Newman and Andrew Casserly as the Royal judges.
Apprentices get plenty to compete for as well, with shoemaking classes grouped by experience (first and second years; third and fourth years) as well as open classes.
Take note that this year the apprentice judge is Steve Newman, who is also a WCF Diploma Examiner. He will also be running this years Euroskills farriery team and will be selecting his team at the Royal.
Whether you are a competition farrier or not, the Royal Festival of the Horse and the Horseshoeing Championships is a great opportunity to see the top farriers and up and coming apprentices in action with the added bonus of a top class horse show on the doorstep.
