2009 Royal Show NAFBAE Farriery Competitions - 7-10th July 2009

Entries are invited for the Royal Show Horseshoeing Competitions organised by NAFBAE at the Forge.

Competitions for farriers embrace shoemaking classes for both qualified farriers and apprentices and shoeing for qualified farriers including the prestigious National Championship Farrier Competition. The awards of Royal Show Champion Farrier and Royal Show Champion Apprentice will also be made.

Royal Show Preview 2009
NAFBAE provides stability as RASE announces last ever Royal Show
Speculation about the future of the Royal Show has been rife in recent years, fuelled by sometimes contradictory messages coming from organisers, RASE (Royal Agricultural Society of England).

This is in stark contrast to the sustained success of NAFBAE’s Farriery competition held during the Royal.

This year promises to be no exception as the Association prepares to host the top UK competition farriers and a large number of determined apprentices during the four days of the Show at the Forge, home of the Association on Stoneleigh Park.

Providing a pillar of continuity to the Royal, on the farriery side the NAFBAE competitions follow a familiar format including shoemaking for apprentices and the additional challenge of live shoeing for qualified farriers.

For regular visitors to the event, there have been some changes to the running order, but otherwise it remains largely unchanged from 2008.

The Association is again very pleased to have substantial support from its sponsors, including title sponsor, Pro Feet.

Dave Smith will also be defending his title for the second year in a row in the National Championship Farrier competition. As if the prestige of being national champion wasn’t enough, MNC have again generously put up £1,000 prize money for the winner.

During the Royal NAFBAE will also be running a competition for blacksmiths. This will take a slightly different form to previous years to better reflect the preferences of competitors.

Out will be live blacksmithing classes to be replaced by a greater emphasis on the so-called static classes. The intention will also be to encourage the public to view the pieces submitted and if competitors so wish, to make them available for sale.

At the time of writing exact details of the new events that will replace the current Royal Show format had not been announced by RASE. However, it is widely anticipated that an equine event – arguably one of the most successful parts of the Royal – will be held on Stoneleigh Park in early July 2010. This will provide the ideal context for the ongoing NAFBAE farriery and blacksmithing competitions, the future of which has never been in doubt.
