The annual competition held at the specialist Rural Craft Centre, at HCT’s Holme Lacy Campus, proved once again to be an overwhelming success. Over 200 Blacksmiths and Farriers gathered from all over Britain to test their skills in a series of competitions that took place throughout the day.
Twenty pairs took part in the Master and Apprentice Live Shoeing category, judged by Grant Moon and Nigel Fennel and with prizes donated by Jim Blurton. 1st place went to J Hayter & J Zysemil, 2nd to J Blurton & K Groes and 3rd to A Casserly & J Casserly.
Forty-four pairs competed in the Master and Apprentice Shoemaking category, judged by David Symons with prizes donated by Jim Blurton. 1st place went to S Beane & A Jew, 2nd to E Harries & S Snow and 3rd to N Brown & R Watson-Greaves.
Eighteen farriers entered the Strömsholm Challenge Eagle Eye competition, producing superb fitting quality forged shoes in just one hour. Judged by Luke Silcock, the winner was D G Wilson who received a shoeing box with shoeing tools donated by Carl Bettison of Strömsholm.
Sixty-five students entered the Forging category judged by Ian Coleman. 1st/2nd year student’s 1st place went to Matt Hicks and 2nd to James Holiday. 3rd/4th year student’s 1st place went to Michael Firth-Letschert and second place to Gareth Samuel. In the Professional category Adrian Legge claimed 1st place with Gareth Thomas coming 2nd.
The competition is in its seventeenth year, thanks to all those who take part, support and sponsor the event. We hope we can achieve the same levels of support for next year’s competition. This year’s sponsors, to name a few, were Strömsholm, Mustad, Arthur Cottam and co., Eastlake and Beechall, Jim Blurton, Jim Ferry, Michael Cerullo, Pegasus Horse shoes, Gibbins Aprons and the Worshipful Company of Farriers. A special thank you should also be made to HCT’s blacksmithing and farriery students for their hard work throughout the day.

11-12 September 2010 - John Mann Memorial Events
Three Memorial Events have been held at Longmeadow Farm during this year in remembrance of John Mann, and as a tribute to his tireless work in promoting farriery and farriery education in the South West of England.Ten coke forges are fired from a huge single industrial fan housed in a modern farm barn. This facility is complimented by a lecture room with seating for sixty people. The forge has been used for competitons in the past but more recently for short courses involving guest presenters.
Over the weekend of September 11/12th a twenty four hour 'Shoe-a-thon' filled the Teign Valley air with the ring of anvils and whiff of smoldering horn as if in rising tribute to the creator of this outstanding facility. Fourteen teams of two worked in two hour shifts throughout mid-day Saturday to mid-day Sunday shoeing horses and ponies supplied so willingly, and again in testimony to John for his support to the local Pony Club and horse owners. John Mann's influences on equine activities resound throughout this beautiful valley, the work he began will be forwarded by his hard working dedicated wife Anne, wonder daughter Hannah and son Andrew. In their strength the farriery community will benefit.
John was a farrier in Lincolnshire before moving to Devon and buying the land at Longmeadow, The house, barns, farm land and caravan site have been built and developed by shear hard work and dedication. In addition a farrier supply business operates from the farm as the South West arm of Arthur Cottam & Co. The whole site is beautifully maintained as a further tribute to a man who has left an indelible mark on so many and carved into the landscape a monument to his life.
'Children in Need' will benefit from the £3500 pounds raised through individual farrier sponsorship.
The organisers are indebted to Arthur Cottam & Co Horseshoe Ltd for sponsoring these events and for their support throughout.

126th LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW FARRIERY COMPETITION 23TH & 24TH JUNE 2010
The 126th Lincolnshire show Farriery competition was held the Wednesday and Thursday of the 23th & 24th of June. Competitor numbers were up again this year and the competition ran very smoothly. A very big thank you to the sponsors, Farriers Choice, Arthur Cottham and Farriers Formula. Without such great sponsors these competitions could not take place. A big thank you also goes out to Ben Smith DWCF for supplying horses’ last minute for the Hunter class. This year’s Judge was Mark Caldwell FWCF who supplied competitors with very well made traditional specimen shoes. A special big thank you once again to the chief steward Adrian Middleton and stewards Andy Welch and Alex Mercer for overseeing the smooth running of the competition. Lastly a massive thank you to the competitors which turned up, for your time and the high standard of work you produced. Hope to see more of you next year.

24-27 February 2010 - AFA Convention, Portland, Oregon
The 39th Annual AFA Convention was a tremendous success; 750 farriers and industry professionals attended 4 days of lectures, clinics and competitions, hailed as the ‘farrier event of the year’.
Billy Crothers, Steven Beane, Sarah Mary-Brown, Jason Gajczak, Jonathon Nunn, Ben Ebrey and Paul Collins were among those that travelled from the UK to attend and to take part in the shoeing and shoemaking classes. Fine performances from UK farriers culminated in Steven Beane securing the Overall ‘High Point’, “the Convention as always was a great trip but this year was made even better as we managed to fit a day’s skiing in!”. Billy Crothers secured two wins, notably the North American Challenge Cup which was his eighth victory in this particular class. First time competitor Jonathon Nunn secured good placings and, impressed with the event as a whole, is already making plans to “definitely go back” next year.
The Convention is an opportunity for leading industry suppliers to showcase farrier supplies and source new products.
The 40th anniversary Convention will be held on February 23rd to 26th 2011 in Lexington, Kentucky. Full event information for those wishing to attend will appear later in the year on the AFA’s website –
www.afaconvention.com.

5-7 February 2010 - European Farrier Championships

UK Farriers lead the way
Sixty farriers from 15 nations battled it out in a fierce competition at the European Farrier Championships held in Bordeaux from February 5 to 7. Competitors qualify to compete and represent their country in a gruelling test of forging and shoeing skills held over three days.
The final day of competition saw just 12 farriers qualify to contest the Championship title in two final rounds of shoemaking and shoeing. The shoemaking included the forging of two therapeutic shoes from bar stock – a ‘G’ bar shoe and a hind straight bar preventer shoe with a ‘trailer’ heel in just one hour. The shoeing class required competitors to trim, fit and make a front and hind three-quarter fullered shoe from straight bar stock with them both nailed on in one hour.
David Varini (Scotland, UK) maintained his overnight lead from fellow UK competitor Steven Beane (England) to secure the coveted title of European Champion Farrier 2010. Steven Beane finished very close behind to secure Reserve European Champion.
Team Manager, Jim Blurton, was obviously delighted with the result, “this is a fantastic achievement for David and Steven and UK farriers as a whole. As a nation we consistently achieve excellent results at the Europeans and the World Championships in Calgary. The standard of farriery is particularly high and constantly improving which will obviously benefit the horses we shoe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank ProFeet for their sponsorship of the UK Farrier Team at the Championships.”
Following rigorous practice sessions over the past few weeks, the win was a particularly special one for David, “to compete at the European Championships is a fantastic opportunity and to win is even better. It is particularly nerve-wracking when you have so many good farriers competing alongside you. I am extremely happy!”
