First British Team Champions Show Their Metal
The Yorkshire Pro Feet Team was named the first British Team Farriery Champions following the inaugural competition at Countryside Live last weekend.
The four team-members – current world champion Steve Beane, Johnny Atkinson, Paul Collins and Sara Mary Brown, all from the Northallerton and Ripon areas in North Yorkshire – finished ahead of the Staffordshire Branch team.
A Worshipful Company of Farriers Silver Medal for the Best Shod Foot was presented to Shaun Chatterton of Lincolnshire, while a Bronze medal went to Johnny Atkinson of Ripon for the Best Specimen Shoe.
In the Senior Apprentices team class, Richard Sunderland of Moor Monkton, York, and Andrew Smith of Follifoot, near Harrogate, took the top prize, with Sam Warman and Tom Williams of Staffordshire taking the Junior Apprentice title.
North Yorkshireman Steve Beane showed just why he is the current World Champion by also taking the honours in the Open Barshoe class.
The 30-year-old from Northallerton didn’t have it all his own way, however – he only took first place after a close tie-break with Matt Randels, from Staffordshire.
Sam Beeley from Rufforth, near York, came third.
Northallerton led the way in the 1st & 2nd Year Apprentice class too, with Tom Middleton taking first place ahead of Ben Grange of Harrogate. Tom Williams of Staffordshire came in third.
James Haigh of Londonderry, North Yorkshire, won the 3rd & 4th Year Apprentice class, with Debbie Connell of York in second place.
Steve Hewitt of Thick Penny Forge, York, who organised the classes, said it had been a very successful weekend. “We’ve already got five teams who want to sign up for next year,” he said. “I’ve had only positive feedback and I think the British Team Championship is an event that could really take off.
“I was delighted with the quality of the entries – we had some of the top guys here and the competition was really fierce. I think those that didn’t come this time will want to be part of it in future.”

The much-awaited Summer Ball and Presentation Dinner has fast become a huge highlight in the farriery social calendar. Just less than 350 farriers and friends attended for an evening of celebrations. With dinner over the Championship results, and winners of the coveted ‘Emily’s Birthday Trophy’, were announced. In the 1st/2nd Apprentices, Ben Taylor was crowned Champion with J C Lee Reserve Champion. James Haigh held on to his early lead in the 3rd/4th Year Apprentices to secure the Championship, with Richard Slater Reserve Champion. Jason Gajczak was Champion in the Intermediate section with Ben Casserly close behind as Reserve and winner of the Advanced section was this year’s Reserve World Champion in Calgary, Darren Bazin, with Royal Show Champion 2009, Gary Darlow, Reserve Champion.
The annual Charity Auction in aid of Cancer Research followed with tremendous prizes donated by farriers, equine professionals and local business and raised a fantastic £8335.00. The celebrations continued into the early hours and a brilliant time was had by all who attended.
Billy and Lucy Crothers would like to thank all of the sponsors for their generous support, the staff at Handmade Shoes for their hard work and the competition stewards who gave up their time. A special thank you also to James Henderson for kind permission of the use of his field and marquee and also to all the competitors and those that attended in the evening to celebrate the day’s events and to support such a worthwhile charity.

5 July 2009 - England's Beane fires up first world blacksmith title
Calgary –- Steven Beane is forging a new resume. And it includes the phrase “world champion.”
Gallery of images from Bob Garner are available to view here.
Steven Beane is forging a new resume, and it includes the phrase ‘world champion’. Steven beat fellow Englishman Darren Bazin in the final of the Calgary Stampede’s 30th anniversary World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition, earning his first career global title in the process after two previous close calls.
‘It’s unbelievable’, said Steven, of Northallerton, North Yorkshire. ‘It’s a dream I’ve had for years. It’s a great feeling. Quite honestly, the guys you compete against (in the final), there’s nothing between us. Any of the top five could be a world champion.’
Steven, who had been the WCBC runner-up, or reserve champion, in 2005 and 2006, took home first prize of $10,000, a limited-edition bronze trophy, and a handcrafted gold-and-silver stampede championship buckle.
Steven had trailed Darren, a two-time WCBC winner, by seven points entering Sunday’s five-man final, and stoked up a fantastic finish, finishing with 153 points to Darren’s 141. Darren took home $2,000 as reserve champion. Derek Gardner was third with 118 points, collecting $1,500; Welshman, Grant Moon, was fourth with 109 points, earning $1,000; and Canada’s Iain Ritchie finished fifth at 88, picking up $500.
Point totals for all competitors reflected three days’ work in front of the forge.
‘The first time I came, I made reserve (champ); I put everything into it, but I wasn’t quite ready’, Steven said. ‘The next year, I probably didn’t put the same amount in. But this time, I really got stuck into it, to the point where I kind of overpractised . . . it was good that I had a week to freshen up a bit.’
Sunday yielded one of the closest top-five finals in event history, according to organisers.
‘Because this was the 30th anniversary of this event, a lot of former winners and finalists circled this one on their calendar’, remarked Blaine Virostek, chair of the Stampede’s Blacksmiths committee.
‘At the other end, we’ve got a lot of first-timers – roughly 25 rookies to Calgary. They’ve won their national competition, and they’re striving to be the world champion’, added Virostek.
Steven was named the 2009 WCBC Forging Champion, Mike Chisham of Petaluma, California, took Artistic Champion honours, Darren was hailed as Shoeing Champion and Ben Casserly of England won Rookie of the Year.
Grant Moon, a six-time champion and a four-time runner-up, was named this year’s inductee into the WCBC Hall of Fame.
Sunday’s morning semi-final narrowed the Top 10 to the Top 5, as contestants shod both front feet of a light draft horse in 60 minutes. Americans Craig Trnka, Gene Leiser and Jake Engler, along with England’s Andrew Reader-Smith and Ben Casserly, were eliminated following semi-finals.
The five finalists finished the job, with another 60 minutes to shoe both hind feet. A blind judging process, delivered by renowned farriers Billy Crothers and Jim Quick of the US, was based on preparation and balance of the horses’ feet, as well as forging, nail placement and finish of the shoe.
Sunday’s Top 10 qualified for the semi-final by accumulating points through a series of shoeing and forging classes on Friday and Saturday.
In all, 73 competitors, including four former WCBC champions, congregated in Calgary for the 30th anniversary edition of what is popularly known as the ‘Olympics of blacksmithing’. Thirteen countries were represented: Germany, England, France, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, the United States and Canada.
‘You can be very good in this industry, but when you make a sport out of it, it’s a whole different dynamic’, said Virostek. ‘Psychology is a big part of competing. You may have the skills and talent, but here, the emotion and the competitive edge enter the picture.’
Forge managed to catch up with Steven at the Royal where he said he was delighted to have won it on his fifth attempt.

24-25 June - 125th Lincolnshire Show Farrier Competition
The 125th Lincolnshire show Farriery competition was held the Wednesday and Thursday of the 24th & 25th of June. Although entries were low, high standard of work was produced. This year the judge was Stuart Spence. The Wednesdays Competition included the Open hunter shoeing of which. Apprentice Shoemaking was held over the two days as was the Open therapeutic shoemaking Class. On Thursday the Open Roadster was held.
This year was successful down to the new Coke forges brought for the forge by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society. This has made a massive difference to the event. Many thanks go to the Judge Stuart Spence, Chief Steward Adrian Middleton and the Sponsors Stromsholm and Arthur Cotthams.
Looking forward to next year’s competition, over the winter there are plans to revamp the old forge and make it a bit more “user friendly”. The format for next year’s competition is also having a revamp. On the Wednesday there will be both the apprentice shoemaking classes and the Open Roadster Class. On the Thursday there will be a new Master and Apprentice Hunter shoeing and shoemaking class. Details and format for this class will be announced at the beginning of 2010.
Lastly a big thank you to all those who turned up and competed. Hope to see you all next year.
D Bennett

27-28 May 2009 - Staffordshire County Show Shoeing Competitions
A total of 65 farriers and apprentices took part in the annual farriery competition organised by the Staffordshire Branch of NAFBAE.
This year a new speed shoemaking class provided a challenge to the competitors who had to make a 3/4 fullered calk and wedge in 20 minutes.
Grateful thanks to the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society who have provided an excellent venue for the event.
Thanks also to Horseshoe and Farriers Supplies Midland for sponsoring the competition and to Mustad who provided brand new O Dwyer Damascus forges for use at Staffordshire Branch events. The forges performed faultlessly throughout the two days proving to be very versatile, giving a controllable and enormously efficient heat when needed.
Competition secretary Jonathan Nunn would like to thank all who supported the event such as stewards and officials, and Mike and Jackie Randles of Logotec Embroidery for the generous help with t-shirts, stewards clothing and prizes.
Judge Mark Preece did a fantastic job and provided some excellent specimen shoes for us. He commented on the high standards of work he saw over both days.

The competition was a massive success this year with a record number entered we had 9 fires running from 7.30am (with some very tired looking apprentices!) to 5.30pm with every round starting and finishing on time, this was a miracle in itself!!. All the classes were full to the brim but with some great helpers the day ran perfectly.
A massive thank you for our Judge Ian Gajczak, he did a fantastic job throughout a very busy day and he was exceptionally pleased with the standard of shoes made during the day so well done to all the competitors for that
We are hugely grateful to the generous support to all our sponsors as the total prize fund was well over £2000 , these include Handmade Shoes UK, NWT, Londonderry Forge Supplies, Richard Ash Horse Shoes, Vettec, B&L Farrier Supplies, Keretex, County Steel, Energas, Swan Products.
Also for all the helpers throughout the day these include Graham Harland, John Hick,Garry Harland, Simon Jackson and everybody else that helped making the competition run fantastically well throughout the day .

7-9 May 2009 - Celebration 100 years horse shoe factory Werkman
International Horse shoeing event

Captions: Gert Jan Salm and Johan Veurink
The first Dutch horse shoe factory Werkman & Co., located in Groningen since 1909, has celebrated its centennial with a grand event on 7th ,8th and 9th of May.
Live piano music was playing and there was a warm welcome to a world of horse shoes. Farriers, vets and other professionals in the field of horse shoes gathered from all over the world to celebrate 100 years of Werkman.
World famous farriers and vets shared their knowledge by giving clinics, lectures and demonstrations. Hans Castelijns, Derek Gardner, Rob Renirie, Loïc Entwistle, John Stewart, Ulrich Wenger, Mitch Taylor, Robert Pinkney, Billy Crothers, Michael Puhl, Aart Bloem, David Canes en Dag Reiersen discussed subjects like daily problems and the latest developments, research and findings in the field of horse shoeing.
90 competitors competed to make the best horseshoe in the classes surprise shoes, eagle eye and model shoes. The apprentices also had to shoe a dead hoof. Joop Wijnen and Mark Milster were the judges of the competition.
The overall winner of the competition is Gerrit Jan Salm (Holland). Billy Crothers went home with the second price and his colleague from the UK, Derek Gardner, won the third price.
Finally there was a pot luck contest. During this free class the competitors made beautiful things like a flying bird, a cobra, a wine holder and many more objects out of scrap steel.
These creations were sold by auction for a charity organisation: The Flying Anvil Company. This organisation supports farriery colleagues all over the world in less developed countries by sharing knowledge and offering help.
Werkman & Co has developed the craft of forging shoes into high-tech production. Nowadays 30.000 shoes are produced a day in full automatic production lines. For already 100 years Werkman & Co. is a well-established world player in the field of horse shoeing. The fourth generation has since joined the company, Christel en Reian support their father in managing the business.
Please visit www.werkman100.com for more information and impressions of the event.
