October 2012 - Newbury Show

We had a truly International show with entries from Hong Kong, Spain, Holland, Ireland and Wales. As always the sun shone on us at Newbury, this being one of the few County shows not to be cancelled this year from the rather wet summer.
Our judge this year was Mr Jay Tovey who fresh from the olympics and then holiday gave our competitors a tough time with his choice of specimens. We are indepted to him for his profesional judging. We must also thank our main sponsor , Mr Carl Bettison of Stromsholm for his continued support. Cecil Swan for the loan of his great forges and Cottams for discounting the steel used.

May 2012 - Farriery Clinic at World Horse Welfare in Aberdeenshire

For the first time World Horse Welfare held a three day event at our Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Aboyne. Six-time World Champion in Farriery, Grant Moon AWCF, ran the clinic on Friday 25 May where he made some shoes for the competition and explained his own approach to making them.
The Friday afternoon consisted of a clinic held by Mustad, the leading horseshoe, nail and tool producer worldwide, where UK Representative Louise Pehrsson gave a brief presentation about the company. In the second part of his clinic, Grant explained how he approaches the application of shoes to the foot and how it is trimmed. He then made and fitted a pair of inverted bar shoes with a rolled toe for the front feet of a horse undergoing rehabilitation.
The afternoon was completed with a presentation by Eileen Gillen, Farm Manager at Belwade Farm, who provided an overview of the work of World Horse Welfare.
The competitions over the Saturday and Sunday went well with the standard improving as the weekend progressed. Competitors from all over Scotland and even as far as Cheshire came along to take part and the apprentices after the first day of competition were privileged to have their own Master Class.
World Horse Welfare Farrier Donald Nicol said: “We were pleased with how the event went and those who attended found both clinics very informative and interesting. I would like to give a huge thanks to Mustad and Louise for supporting our competition and to Grant for giving up his time to come and do the farriery clinic and judge the two-day competition.
“Thanks also goes to our other sponsors of Handmade Shoes (UK) Ltd, Brooks Lane, J & A Ferrie Farrier supplies, Jason Sim Ltd, Alex Sharman, Donald Nicol Farriers Ltd, The Wade Family, World Horse Welfare and staff at Belwade Farm for the use of their premises, and Brenda for all her running about getting supplies.”
Louise Pehrsson from Mustad commented on the event by saying: “The whole event was fantastic – the location provided by World Horse Welfare and the people. It is a great way to raise awareness about trimming and shoeing correctly and the skills and expertise involved. It is an event close to my heart that I’m always more than happy to get involved in because it’s worth it for the better of the horse.”

5th February 2012 - Middlewich Shoemaking Competition

Again the competition was a great success with over a hundred entries, a record number of applicants considering this was only its third year. A massive thank you must go to our sponsors for their support without which the day would not have been able to go ahead. Legges Brothers sponsored 338 pieces of steel and Calor Gas donated 20 gas bottles which are both an amazing show of generosity. Louise from Mustad came on the day with prizes for the apprentice and open competitors while MNC Horseshoes, Breakaway Horseshoes, 3rd Millennium Horseshoes and Jameg sent prizes galore for the intermediate and open competitors.
As this competition was originally set up to encourage apprentices there were 38 awards for the training farriers all sponsored by Sean Mooney (Holmes), Stromsholm, Mustad, J&A Ferries, Londonderry Forge Supplies, Jim Blurton, Derik Gardner Tools, Alan Calvert Tools and Leon Bentham provided a new bronze horse trophy for the apprentice champion.
In their infinite wisdom Leon Bentham and JC Lee decided to this year set up all the 21 fires and anvils in a redundant warehouse next to BL Farrier Supplies ltd in Middlewich, which seemed a logical idea as the previous two years had been a frantic effort to erect a marquee in the reliable British weather and then the morning of the competition set all twenty fires and anvils up and then clear it all away again that evening but with a secure building this could be done at leisure in the days previous and proceeding, easy!!
1600hrs on the Saturday evening all prepared we felt confident we had thought of everything, on the timetable we had 84 competitors set out to each compete in two rounds of shoemaking and unfortunately we had to send 18 of the later entries back as there was no room to fit them in. Just ready to set off home for the night and it started snowing and as in true British fashion a bit of snow and the country went into panic. Understandably Farriers travelling from further afield decided not to drive the distance which left us with about ten or so free spaces which came in handy for the lads who were held up in the morning and missed their first round.
In the morning the first six rounds were held and we soon realised 21 fires in an enclosed space, even on a frosty day, was going to be a HOT day!
