The Worshipful Company of Farriers and the Farrier's Registration Council
Presentation of Fellowship, Associateship, Diploma and Registration Certificates

The Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Mr Reg Howe, and the Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council, Professor Ron Jones OBE JP DVSc FRCVS, presided at a Presentation Ceremony at The Honourable Artillery Company, on Thursday 2nd September 2010.

A presentation ceremony for the Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma and the Farrier’s Registration Council Registration Certificates was held at the Armoury House, Headquarters of the Honorable Artillery Company in London, on September 2. The Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Mr Reg Howe, and the Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council, Professor Ron Jones OBE JP DVSc FRCVS, presided at the ceremony. BFBA congratulates all those receiving certificates.
Addressing the assembly, The Master congratulated the newly qualified farriers on their fine achievement. Drawing attention to the two Associateships about to be presented, he encouraged those new farriers on the first rung of the ladder to farriery excellence to also aspire to higher qualifications.
He also offered some sage advice; that at all times they should demonstrate professionalism, not just in their farriery but also in the conduct of their business. Even if times continue to get tougher, he urged them to avoid trying to make quick money by 'banging on shoes' at £45 a set and upsetting the equilibrium of the marketplace. Similarly, if at times they were to feel that the client was failing to keep their part of the contract, for example by not having the horse ready for shoeing, then they, the farrier, had a responsibility by their own professionalism to set out their requirements.
In difficult times, it is those who provide the best service that will survive.
Failing to register for VAT was another temptation that lay in wait for the busy farrier, he said. A new initiative by HM Revenue & Customs will see them investigating businesses ‘likely’ to have a turnover above the VAT threshold. A visit by the VAT inspector already seems inevitable for many farriers.
He then said that one of his aims during his time as Master was to encourage good working relations between vets and farriers and now that was to be recognised at the highest level. The Company and the Royal Veterinary College at Potters Bar were to be formally affiliated; so saying he then exchanged the formal documents of affiliation with Professor David Church, Vice Principal of the College.
The Master addressed the assembly and presented the Company’s Associateship to Jonathan Nunn and Mark Thorkildson from Minnesota and the Diploma to 47 candidates, one of whom gained honours and five of whom gained a distinction.
The David Llewellyn Prize for the best written paper went to Abigail Hardy DipWCF and the Mike Seckington prize for the best practical shoeing went to Olwyn Starkey DipWCF.
The examinations for the diploma took place in July at Herefordshire College of Technology, Warwickshire College and Myerscough College. The Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council also addressed the assembly.
Mr Howard Cooper OBE FWCF (Hons) (Chairman of the NFTA Board) also presented the Farriers Memorial Award for the Best NVQ Portfolio of the group to Luke Massey (Warwickshire College) and Best Forging Skills of the group to Jackie Campbell (Myerscough). In each case the winning college was also presented with a shield to display.
Representatives of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, the Farriers Registration Council, the colleges, BFBA and the Company’s Examination Board were also present.
A church service, led by the Reverend Jenny Potter, was held immediately prior to the presentation ceremony at Wesley’s Chapel. The recipients were supported by their training farriers, together with their families and friends.
