Farriers’ Memorial Award
Following the presentation of the certificates, John Dring, announced this year’s winner of the Farriers’ Memorial Award. He began by explaining the award’s history. In 2007, he said, the Farrier Training Agency worked with the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (known as BHEST) to create an award in honour of two farriery colleagues, who dedicated themselves to develop and improve the training for future farriers. Ivon Bell, MBE, a Fellow of Worshipful Company of Farriers, assisted the industry to create and implement the new NVQ, working closely with Carl Jones, FWCF. The Farriers Memorial Award was created to keep their spirits alive and honour their commitment and dedication to the industry.
In February 2009, and as each intake group completes the NVQ, the colleges are asked to nominate the candidate who produced the most impressive portfolio of evidence. Mrs Sarah Hamlyn, currently the External Verifier for BHEST, kindly judged the award.
The successful nominees receive a certificate to congratulate them on being nominated for producing individual portfolios of such high standard. This year’s nominees were Yogev Sharp (The School of Farriery, Hereford); Stuart Malcolm (Oatridge); Julia Cheney (Myerscough) and Joshua Hall (Warwickshire). The overall winner was Joshua Hall.

28th August 2008 - Worshipful Company of Farriers, Presentation of Diploma Registration Certificates

The Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Richard Kinsella Bevan, and the Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council, Simon Curtis, FWCF, HonAssocRCVS, presided at a presentation ceremony for the farriers who gained Associateship and Diploma examinations on August 28, at the Honourable Artillery Company in London. NAFBAE congratulates them all.
The Master addressed the assembly. The Company’s Diploma was awarded to 55 candidates, eight of whom gained a distinction. The examinations for the Diploma took place in July at Herefordshire College of Technology, Warwickshire College and Oatridge Agricultural College in Scotland. The Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council also addressed the assembly.
Mr Curtis described the FRC’s dismay at the Government’s interpretation of the EU directive that allows foreign farriers to come to the UK to work. This, he said, had been fought since 2005 and discussions were ongoing.
Despite Miles Williamson-Noble’s retirement as Training Director of the FTA, Mr Curtis said that Mr Williamson-Noble would continue to be registrar of the European Federation of Farrier Associations (EFFA) that would administer the new Euro-farrier certificate. He thanked him for his work over 11 years with the FRC and the FTA. Mr Curtis welcomed the new Training Director, Peter Ablett (see page 11).
Representatives of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, the Farriers Registration Council, the colleges, NAFBAE and the Company’s Examination Board were also present.
A church service, led by the Company Chaplain, Canon Flora Winfield, was held at Wesley’s Chapel immediately prior to the presentation ceremony.
The recipients were supported by their training farriers, together with their families and friends – you may have heard details on The Archers (BBC Radio 4) as Chris Carter also received his certificate at the ceremony!
Farriers memorial award
During the ceremony, Management Board Chairman, Howard Cooper introduced the Farriers Memorial Award. He explained how, in 2007, the Farriery Training Agency and the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust created an award in honour of two farriery colleagues – former Farrier Sergeant Majors – who had dedicated themselves to developing and improving the training of future farriers. Ivon Bell, FWCF, MBE, (who helped to create and implement the new NVQ) and Carl Jones, FWCF, (who primarily worked at the School of Farriery, Hereford, and assisted the FTA in bringing the training documentation up to the high standard it enjoys today).
In August 2007 the four approved colleges were asked to nominate the candidate who had produced the most impressive ‘Portfolio of Evidence’. Sarah Hamlyn, the External Verifier for the Awarding Body, the British Horseracing Education and Standards Board judged the award.
The nominees were: Rebecca Barnett (The School of Farriery, Hereford); Simon Haddingham (Warwickshire College); Carl Greenwell (Oatridge College); Christopher Smith (Myerscough College).
The overall winner was Simon Haddingham and the reserve was Christopher Smith. All the successful nominees received a certificate recognising their nomination. The winning apprentice’s college received a prestigious shield recognising its efforts in assisting the winning candidate.
