August 2011 - First farriers received Bachelor of Science degree in Farriery

The first cohort of farriers to achieve the BSc(Hons) Farriery got their awards on July 14 at Myerscough College; they are Peter Balchin, Paul Conroy, Simon Curtis, Craig D'arcy, Jon Mather, Matt Jones and David Mitchell. Simon Curtis also won the Foundation Professor's award, ‘The Reilly Memorial Rosebowl for Research Award’ for the best thesis.
Foundation degrees in farriery were awarded on the same day to: David Hall, Adam Young, Rob Golder, Marc Jerram, Angus Wiseman and Mark Wood. Adam Young won the Research prize for the foundation degree and Rob Golder won the Caldwell Cup for the best practical exam result.

The Worshipful Company of Farriers and the Farrier's Registration Council
Presentation of Fellowship, Associateship, Diploma and Registration Certificates

The Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Mr Jeremy Fern, and the Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council, Professor Ron Jones OBE JP DVSc FRCVS, presided at a Presentation Ceremony at The Honourable Artillery Company, London on 24 February.
The Master addressed the assembly and presented the Company’s Fellowship to Mr Mike Miller from the USA. He also presented the Associateship to five candidates, two of whom had qualified through the Foundation Degree Course at Myerscough College. The Varnham Trophy for the best practical in the AWCF examinations 2010 was awarded to Mr Jonathan Nunn AWCF. The Master presented the Diploma to 59 candidates, six of whom achieved a Distinction. The David Llewellyn Prize for the best written paper went to Mr James Newhouse DipWCF and the Mike Seckington Prize for the best practical shoeing went to Mr Harry Garner DipWCF.
The examinations for the Company’s Diploma took place in January at Herefordshire College of Technology, Warwickshire College, Myerscough College, and Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The Chairman of the Farriers Registration Council also addressed the assembly, and Mr John Dring of the National Farriery Training Agency Management Board announced that the prize for the Approved Training Farrier of the Year 2010 went to Mr Jim Blurton AWCF.
Representatives from the Court of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, the Farriers Registration Council, the National Farriers Training Agency, the British Farriers and Blacksmiths Association, the colleges, and the Company’s Examinations Board were also present.
A Church Service, led by the Company Chaplain, Canon Flora Winfield, was held at Wesley’s Chapel immediately prior to the Presentation Ceremony. The recipients were supported by their Approved Training Farriers, together with their families and friends. Altogether, some 275 persons attended the event.
