The Dorset Show

As published on page 24 of Forge Magazine April 2013

I am Susan King and I have been employed as a Teaching Assistant by the Learning Support Department at Kingston Maurward College, Dorset for two years. Over the last year I have had the privilege of working in our state-of-the-art forge and welding departments and have been impressed by the dedication of the team, which includes Justin Butler (the boss), Simon Grant- Jones (the film star), and Brian Hill (the Jack of all trades). Their enthusiasm is infectious and I, myself, have now developed an interest in Forge work. I am particularly interested in the history and creativity of the craft and love to see the achievements of our students.
This summer I was thrilled to be invited to steward on the Blacksmiths’ stand at the Dorset County Show, organised by Simon Grant-Jones. On arrival I was immediately introduced to the gentlemen Blacksmiths whose camaraderie soon put me at my ease.
I was amazed at all the exhibits (there were 59 altogether) and had great fun watching the live competitions where the challenge was to make nutcrackers within 75 minutes and a saleable item within 30 minutes. The activity certainly drew the crowd and gave me the opportunity to promote the craft.
Hugh Adams CWCB of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, whom I had met briefly on a previous occasion when he was visiting Kingston Maurward College, was there supporting us. The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths has been fantastic in supporting the College and its students and it was great being able to spend time with Hugh and learn more about the Company, its history and how it supports and provides funds for these and other events and charities.
Winners of the competitions were presented with their awards by our Principal, Clare Davison, and Richard Jones FWCB. Our own Simon Grant-Jones AWCB, of whom we are very proud for his winning the National Championship Blacksmith award this year, won the static competition and Dyfed Jones from North Wales claimed the reserve. James Crossman from Somerset won both the live competitions. John Bellamy from Devon claimed the reserve for them both.
Overall, it was a lovely event and a special thank you is owed to Lynne Grant–Jones for the wonderful feast she provided. I feel extremely grateful to have been involved as a steward for these amazing craftsmen and have been inspired by such interesting people. Perhaps if I work hard, next year I will have a go at the live competition, myself.
