FRC - Farriery training strategy review
Consultation phase
The Advanced Apprenticeship in farriery is well established and successful, but in order to ensure its continuing success the Farriers Registration Council (FRC) has initiated a review of the current scheme. To that end a working group has been set up, which will report to the FRC Council by the end of the year. The Council will then consider the working group's report and decide if any of the recommendations should be accepted and what, if any, further action is required.
The Farriers Registration Council (FRC) regulates the farriery profession and approves the apprenticeship requirements and associated qualifications to ensure they meet registration standard. The National Farrier Training Agency (NFTA) is a division of the FRC with responsibility for the management of the Advanced Apprenticeship in farriery.
The content of the framework of the apprenticeship is based on specific competencies, or National Occupational Standards, and these are next due to be reviewed by Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for landbased industries including farriery, in 2014. It is anticipated that any approved recommendations arising from the FRC's review would be introduced following, and in parallel with any arising from, the 2014 review by Lantra.
The working group is inviting all major stakeholders with a direct role in the delivery of the apprenticeship and/or associated qualifications including learners, trainers, colleges, examination awarding bodies, professional associations, as well as those representing equine interests, to submit comments and/or proposals for consideration. A specific questionnaire has also been produced in order to obtain feedback and views from Registered Farriers and apprentices. The consultation phase will continue until the end of August, during which time the working group may invite major interested parties to meet in person to discuss and qualify their proposals if appropriate.
The working group is chaired by Professor Ron Jones, who is also Chairman of the FRC, and the other members are Carl Bettison AWCF Hons, Lisa Jarvis (Lantra), Professor John Reilly and Kevin Willard FWCF, who is also a member of the NFTA Board.
