The Association has many branches spread around the country. These branches hold a minimum of three meetings a year where Farriers/Blacksmiths can meet and discuss any problems they have faced in their local area. It is a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and also to discuss new techniques with like-minded people. If you would like more information on your local branch please contact the Associations Head Office.

BFBA Farriers Winter Ball - Hosted by Staffordshire Farriers
On the 14th January the Staffordshire Branch of the B.F.B.A held their Winter Ball at the Buckatree Hall Hotel, Telford. A fantastic amount of money in excess of £7000 was raised on the night during a Charity Auction which is to be split equally between the Bob Champion Male Cancer Trust and the Donna Louise Trust Children’s Hospice.
I would like to thank everyone who attended for their support in raising such a large sum of money. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Grant Moon for a splendid meal and also to his hard working staff for making it a very enjoyable evening. Thanks also to Jon and Sara Nunn for their tireless hard work in organizing every last detail and to all the people who made or donated items for the sale, many thanks for your support.
I was overwhelmed at the amount raised for the cancer charities which is a cause close to my heart. Let’s hope the branch can succeed next year in, not only raising money for charity, but having a very enjoyable evening as well.
Chairman
Mick Handley

Dear Sir,
On Saturday 13th February 15 members of the Staffordshire Branch and a visiting American farrier visited Doug Bradbury’s museum at Clay Cross Derbyshire. We were all impressed with the Bradbury family’s dedicated efforts in producing an incredible array of all types of memorabilia regarding the history of farriery. In addition, were many other artifacts of interest. I would highly recommend others to visit this establishment, not only farriers. With many thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Bradbury for their wonderful hospitality.
Yours sincerely
Mick Handley
Chairman Staffordshire Branch.

Sixty two people attended the Staffordshire Branch NAFB&AE Charity Ball at Slaters Country Inn, Baldwins Gate, Staffordshire. During the evening a charity raffle and auction raised £1,250 for the Douglas Mcmillan Trust for cancer care and £1,200 for the Staffordhire Branch funds. Thanks to friends who donated auction and raffle prizes and to all who attended and gave generously to make the evening a resounding success.Special thanks to Mike and Jackie Randles, Grant Moon, Louise Pehrsson and Mustad, Jane Crompton, Mrs E. Byrne, Matt Randles, who all donated prizes.

CPD EVENTS
The NAFBAE Staffordshire Branch organisers would like to improve local CPD opportunities for all farriers. A number of lectures and clinics are to be held, which will hopefully fulfil some CPD requirements and be interesting and informative to farriers and apprentices. Grant Moon kindly gave the first of these at The Mill at Worston, Staffs on 23rd March. This was well attended by farriers from all over Staffordshire and was a great success. Each NAFBAE meeting will include a talk or presentation. Mustad will be presenting one clinic in Staffordshire, demonstrating shoemaking techniques and horse evaluation.
Karl Bettison of Stromsholm has also asked to attend an evening meeting to talk to farriers and apprentices about their range of products. Both will be booked and confirmed in the very near future.
Farriers attending these will gain between 2 to 4 CPD points.
Instead of minutes of meetings four newsletters per year, reporting on events, will be posted to members and subscribers.
Also planned this year will be more shoemaking clinics, using the ODwyer Damascus forges and Staffs branch equipment.
A lecture presentation by Jackie Hickman DWCF who is an RSPCA officer and registered farrier. Jackie will share some experiences involving her work as an RSPCA officer with equines. Dates to be confirmed for June, please contact J. Nunn for further details.
PREVIOUS EVENTS
27-28 May 2009 - Staffordshire County Show Shoeing Competitions
A total of 65 farriers and apprentices took part in the annual farriery competition organised by the Staffordshire Branch of NAFBAE.
This year a new speed shoemaking class provided a challenge to the competitors who had to make a 3/4 fullered calk and wedge in 20 minutes.
Grateful thanks to the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society who have provided an excellent venue for the event.
Thanks also to Horseshoe and Farriers Supplies Midland for sponsoring the competition and to Mustad who provided brand new O Dwyer Damascus forges for use at Staffordshire Branch events. The forges performed faultlessly throughout the two days proving to be very versatile, giving a controllable and enormously efficient heat when needed.
Competition secretary Jonathan Nunn would like to thank all who supported the event such as stewards and officials, and Mike and Jackie Randles of Logotec Embroidery for the generous help with t-shirts, stewards clothing and prizes.
Judge Mark Preece did a fantastic job and provided some excellent specimen shoes for us. He commented on the high standards of work he saw over both days.
